We see from left to right: the four evangelists each with his particular attribute. Luke with is a corned beast referring to the beginning of this gospel in the temple where was offered. John with an angel who is supposed to have dictated to him as he wrote. Matthew with an eagle symbolising the sublime language of his gospel. Because the gospel of Marc begins with the preaching in the desert he is depicted with a lion. Because the evangelists were writers these sorts of pictures were used for bookshops.
